How this works:
Dancers sign up on arrival.
You will dance in your street clothes (costume not needed). Priority is give to dancers who did not perform in the JamBallah NW shows. We put your name in a hat. When the improv jam starts, Claudia will pull names out of a hat in random order. When your name is called, you’ll hop up on stage for 3 minutes. When the next dancers is called, you exit stage and they enter. This will all be to DJ Amar live mixing. You may enter or exit mid-song. You will not know what Amar will be playing, and Amar will not know who will be performing next.

Electric Vardo March 2016 Newsletter

Springtime is my favorite time of year, and we are leaping forward into more awesome events. Winter hasn’t been too shabby at all. One more amazing event for the records – to add to my list of recommendations, is one that Sam and I got to teach at last month. Add Reigning Down on Oregon to your list of Awesome belly dance events to check out. The uniqueness of this event is in the environment and format. It’s not a “festival”, it is a Retreat. It is Dance Camp in the woods. Reigning Down on Oregon has been a hidden gem in the forest near Salem, Oregon.

Speaking of Hidden gems – one of the Newest events is quickly getting noticed, yet I keep finding people who don’t know about it. Last year, I attended the first Tribal Trove in San Diego, and put that on my list of events I want to go to every year within a couple of hours of being there. Sam and I are both teaching this year, and I will be shooting video again. They have an awesome new venue this year, closer to downtown.

TribalTrove

Affordability is a primary factor for many dancers who are seeking out learning experiences. With that in mind, I highly recommend checking out these two events. Tribal Trove is right around the corner, and you can still sign up for classes. the Saturday night showcase is almost sold out (Seating is sold out, standing room tickets will be available at the door) and Sunday show seating will likely sell out soon too. Both nights have unique and stellar lineups. Check out tribaltrovesd.com for all of the current information and registration links. There are daytime performance as well.

Note that the Main Event is over the weekend, but the workshops will start Friday Evening. I will be teaching my music editing workshop on Friday Evening. Medina will also be teaching on Friday.

Fast forward to April, Sam and I head up to Seattle for another one of our very favorite events, Cues & Tattoos. As usual, I will be playing at and co-producing The Emerald Vardo Official Cues & Tattoos After Party, where Lady Ra and I rock the dancefloor beats on Saturday night. This year, All events will be At Seattle Center. Everything will be walkable. Calamity Sam will be teaching and I will be shooting video.

Electric Vardo February 2016 Newsletter

Ok, so I successfully got to kicking off 2016 with a new post and a few website tweaks.

Hello Beautiful people. I hope you have had a good start to your year. If you haven’t, I hope it starts shaping up for you nicely heading toward springtime. I’m still having a hard time remembering to write 2016 on things.

1-HoT

Yeah, that’s David Satori and me with Auberon last fall at the House of Tarot show in SF. I’m not quite sure how that happened!

I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of ATS Homecoming this year (a gathering of the global ATS community in January). I provided sound and lighting for the shows, sound for the workshops, and recorded video of the shows. It was an amazing event with awesome workshops, vendors, shows and more for 3 days. This was the 2nd Annual, and with the success of 2 years in a row, they are planning it again next year. Keep an eye out. Highly recommended.

ATS Homecoming 2015 students, instructors, hosts and crew.

As promised, I am back with a February newsletter with updates on upcoming events this month and a glimpse forward into the next couple of months. Sam and I have some pretty awesome things coming up, as do our Electric Vardo alumni partners and family.

We will have 3-5 performances on any given night, sometimes more. On Special nights (for example, last week we celebrated our resident Millie’s birthday and had twice as many performances) we will have more performances. On quarterly 5th Tuesdays, Underground Nomads hosts 5th Tuesday benefits, raising funds for various charity organizations chosen by members of our crew, where we invite local vendors and usually showcase around 10 performances.
We ask for a $5 donation at the door (Sliding scale $5-20 on benefit and Special nights). Our next 5th Tuesday Benefit is on March 29th.

Electric Vardo 2014 Catch-up newsletter

Electric Vardo

      . . . Upcoming events and news . . .

Hello dear wonderful friends and supporters. I hope you have had a great start to your year. Things are kicking into high gear over here. I haven’t reached out to you in a couple of months, so I will say Happy New Year, to start off. I also want to always remember to thank you for your continued support.

Since I last checked in back in December, i’ve been working on some great things coming up, which will be detailed below. I had a great New Year’s Eve up Portland, where I played at The Beloved Festival’s Inspire Truth NYE event at the Portland Art Museum. Nagasita and members of The Dogon Lights joined me in a tribute set to Cheb i Sabbah. It was an emotional and beautiful experience, to say the least.

Underground Nomads – which many of you know we had started together with Cheb i Sabbah – has really been taking shape, thanks to a bunch of wonderful, amazing people who are part of the crew and come out to support. We closed out the year on our last Tuesday of the year with Maneesh the Twister and myself spinning and an Eclectic Ensemble style improv performance jam. It was our biggest night to date. We weren’t sure if anyone would come since it was Xmas Eve, but the place was packed till closing with a combination of people who weren’t celebrating the holiday and people who came after family festivities. It was a really fun night with great energy. Maneesh and I played till 2:15am. ( See Live Video Feed: Part 1 Part 2 ).

Speaking of Live Video Feeds, Yes, we stream live when we can. So far it has been the DJ sets, but we are working on setting up to stream the performances live as well for folks around the world to see us. We have started an Underground Nomads Support Team fund on GoFundMe, and would love any support you are able to help us out with. Click HERE for Info. and to donate, if you wish and are able to.

Of course, building this new weekly has been taking a lot of energy and time, which is well worth it. But that is just a part of what is going on in our amazing lives which You help to support.

Calamity Sam has been teaching Unmata/Hot Pot I.T.S. classes in the Bay Area and rehearsing like crazy with an amazing team of dancers performing together in Zoe Jakes’ House of Tarot project which will be debuted at Tribal Massive next month (See link above for info) and closing out the weekend at Tribal Fest in May. Following a performance with Unmata and Zoe at the sold out Beats Antique show at the Fillmore in SF, Sam has also joined The Bhoomi Project and will be performing with them at Beats Antique shows in SF (2/21 – Sold Out) and Sacramento (4/2).

Next up on the agenda, one of our favorite community belly dance nights in LA (We stream it live so you can watch if you are far away, but we encourage locals to come to the show)- Eclectic Ensemble. It is more of a house party that we share with the world, where I DJ, mixing live for tag-team improv performances. It is True Improv. The dancers have no idea what I am going to play for them and I have no idea who is going on next. It is a lot of fun for everyone involved – performers and audience alike.

One of the major things I am working on right now is a showcase highlighting San Francisco Tribal and Fusion Belly Dance and the music that has been a part of it, bringing together the pioneers who have taken the dance form to levels unimaginable by many. We are working on the details right now – but you will want to save the date if you are in SF. Some of you from out of town will be here for Rakkasah that weekend, and you will have 2 great late night events on this weekend.

A note from Electric Vardo:

Hello and thank you to all of our dear supporters who keep us creating. You are the ones who continue to make it happen.

We are coming out of a whirlwind of a month, with everything from Calamity Sam performing at the Fillmore with Unmata, Zoe and Beats Antique to saying goodbye to a music legend and friend who inspired and was a great influence in Amar’s career as a DJ and music producer – Cheb i Sabbah. We took opportunities to celebrate his life and continue to do so.

December kicks off a Tribute tour to Cheb i Sabbah with a PreParty for the Mystic Island Festival in Santa Cruz and a New Year’s Eve show in Portland. Inspire Truth on New Year’s Eve is an important event and honor for Amar, as he will be playing the set that Cheb i Sabbah was booked to play, as a tribute to him. Continuing into 2014, Amar will be visiting different cities in collaboration with local DJs and dancers who have been close to and influenced greatly by his music. 2014 tour dates will be announced in January.

Sam just wrapped up her Hot Pot I.T.S. sessions for 2013 and will be taking a short break until January … Ok, well, not really a break. While in LA for Zulu Lounge, she will be teaching a workshop in LA, hosted by BFLA. Following that, she will teach a couple of Fusion Belly Dance classes in Oakland before ITS resumes in 2014.

We hope you will join us at some of these events if you are local or if we make it to your town. Remember you can stream the Underground Nomads Tuesdays live from your home if you are far away from us.

Thank you for your support,
DJ Amar & Calamity Sam,
Electric Vardo

(San Francisco):

New Delhi Restaurant and
Compassionate Chefs Cafe
Bollywood Dance Party

Electric Vardo and Non Stop Bhangra have been a part of Compassionate Chefs Cafe with New Delhi Restaurant Chef and founder Ranjan Dey, since he started the organization a few years ago. CCC is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization with one goal: To help children locally and globally. We help the Tenderloin After School Program (TASP) and Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, India to uplift the lives of young children in need of assistance. This project is to complete the full circle of the Ekatva journey. Our goal is to take 16 kids and five chaperons from TASP to visit the kids of Ekatva at the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, India in 2015-2016. Compassionate Chefs Cafe has already raised $20,000 towards this project. Our goal is to raise $60,000 this year. With your support and generous donation we will reach much closer to the goal. We are in constant touch with Nimo from Ekatva to help create an organic process to this journey. The main idea is to create a greater good objective of the spirit of Global citizenship through a dance-drama program. This will start locally first and grow into a city and state wide effort culminating into a trip to visit our brothers and sisters across the ocean in Gandhi Ashram. The essence of this project is following the foot steps of Ekatva with guidance from Nimo through Laura, the Program Director of Tenderloin After School Program. Sunday evening will include a feast at New Delhi Restaurant, 160 Ellis St. in San Francisco, with live entertainment featuring DJ Jimmy Love and Dholrhythms Dance Co. Click on the image above for more information about the event and CCC.

Electric Vardo November newsletter – Part 1

A note from Amar:
Dear friends and supporters. You may have heard the news already of Dear Cheb i Sabbah’s passing a couple of days ago. He was an inspiration, friend and uncle to me. He was one of the key people who gave me the opportunities which brought my career to where it is today. I remember back in 2004 when I was a new DJ, he asked me to sub for him at his Tuesday night weekly at Nickie’s while he was travelling. That is a big part of what kickstarted it all for me.

He was diagnosed with stage  stomach cancer just a day after he played at the Tribal Fest Afterparty in May of 2011. The music and support of all of the people from around the world who stepped up to help him with his medical treatments that and filled the dancefloors that summer forward is what kept him going longer than the doctors ever believed possible (they gave him an estimate of just a few weeks to live). Following alternative treatment in germany and India, he strongly snapped back and continued travelling and rocking dancefloors. He was still coming out and DJing until just a few weeks ago. Holistic treatment kept him healthier for the time he was here than chemo ever would have. He chose the right thing so he could be present rather than slowly fade away. His message to all who love him is to send him off with meditations wishing him well on his journey into the next realm.

His partner during the last few years of his life, Eloise, who was by his side and took care of Cheb i Sabbah from beginning to end, shares this message: “Please take a moment to recite mantra for Chebiji’s liberation, for world peace, for true happiness for all sentient beings. “OM MANI PADME HUM” … It was my honor to care for him, to share life and love together. He is forever with me, he is my angel. OM MANI PADME HUM!”

Eloise is His angel, and is a permanent member of our family. Blessings go out to Eloise, to the rest of Chebiji’s family – including his close friends who he considered family just the same – and to his extended family of supporters who stood by his side from near and far.

This coming Tuesday, we will be honoring him at the new Tuesday weekly that we started in part as a way to keep his dream alive. Cheb i Sabbah, DJ Sep, Dulce Vita, Gina Grandi and myself launched Underground Nomads together as a new event to bring together the world music vibes that were created by Cheb i Sabbah’s legendary Tuesdays at Nickie’s, by the Thursday nights at El Rio back in the day with Ultra Gypsy, DJ Sep, myself, Soulsalaam and Jef Stott, the belly dance nights at Amira and other regular world music inspired events that we all used to go out to, perform at and enjoy. We are continuing and Growing our Underground Nomads nights in honor of Chebiji.

The streaming link is at the f8 website.
